Distributed SNMP Security Pack

Whether updating the SNMPv3 management infrastructure or migrating to SNMPv3 security for the first time, system administrators rely on the Distributed SNMP Security Pack™ (DSSP). DSSP provides the following features:

DSSP Server and DSSP Remote Forwarder

Composed of two parts, DSSP includes the DSSP Server and the DSSP Remote Forwarder.

The following architecture illustration summarizes how DSSP works with existing SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and SNMPv3 managers.

DSSP

Extending SNMPv1 and SNMPv2 Managers

DSSP adds SNMPv3 capabilities to management applications including CA eHealth® and HP OpenView™ Performance Insight.

DSSP provides a clean interface for non-SNMPv3 managers to access SNMPv3 security and management features. DSSP enables:

By providing SNMPv3 support to vintage management applications, DSSP offers a comprehensive approach to management security, including authentication, authorization, access control, data integrity, key management, and encryption options.

Extending SNMPv3 Managers

DSSP offers enhanced SNMPv3 capabilities to management applications that already support a basic SNMPv3 infrastructure, such as HP OpenView™ Network Node Manager™.

Enhanced SNMPv3 capabilities include:

Designed to Extend Any Manager

DSSP can be used to add or extend the SNMP capabilities of any management application.

Managers that can communicate natively with SNMP messages transmit Get, GetNext, and Set requests to the DSSP Server running on the same computing device. The DSSP Server repackages and retransmits the message onto the local network or onto a remote network accessed through the DSSP Remote Forwarder (below).

Managers that do not have built-in SNMP message capabilities can access DSSP running on the same computing device through a command-line interface (utilities) to send Get, GetNext, and Set requests. For example, DSSP could be used with the Nagios open source monitoring system as a commercial-grade alternative to the native Linux SNMP utilities.

Managers can also access the capabilities of DSSP through a C-language or Java™-language application programming interface (API) using the optional Management Application Development Kit.

Managers that receive SNMP Traps can process notifications through DSSP will all of the same benefits described earlier. In addition, managers that are programmed to receive only SNMP Traps can also receive SNMP Informs (DSSP will acknowledge each alarm and forward the message as a Trap).

Managers that process alarms but do not have built-in SNMP message capabilities can receive both SNMP Traps and SNMP Informs through DSSP. Alarm delivery can be accomplished through a command-line interface or API as described above.

DSSP Remote Forwarder

Using DSSP Remote Forwarder, SNMP requests can be carried from a DSSP Server over TCP or SSL connections through a firewall to a DSSP Remote Forwarder. The DSSP Remote Forwarder then sends the request to the agent's SNMP port.

Visit the DSSP Remote Forwarder product page for more information.

SNMP Security Pack Compared to DSSP

SNMP Security Pack™ was our first product to add SNMPv3 support to existing network management stations. DSSP, which replaces SNMP Security Pack, adds network management through firewalls.
