Security Configuration Tools Announced

Las Vegas, Nevada, April 2, 1996 - SNMP Research today unveiled Security Configuration Plus, a graphical tool for setting up security configurations on SNMPv2* agents, managers, and mid-level managers. Security Configuration Plus greatly simplifies the process of configuring and administration of SNMPv2* security.

"SNMP security administration is no longer difficult using this graphical tool," stated Dr. Jeffrey Case, President of SNMP Research. "We introduced this product with the end-user in mind. As a result, customers can be assured that there will be no delay in the availability of deployable secure SNMP products once SNMPng standardization efforts proceed as anticipated."

Security Configuration Plus features a full management implementation of SNMPv2*, including the security and remote configuration capabilities featured in today's interoperability demo sponsored by Bay Networks, BGS, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard, and SNMP Research.

Security Configuration Plus simplifies SNMPv2* configuration and administration by hiding the complexities of SNMPv2 security. As the Interop demonstration shows, setup is smooth. While SNMPv2U requires manual installation of user security files for each agent on the network, SNMPv2* setup eliminates manual installation -- a key consideration for real-world deployment in large, complex networks.

"Because of the remote configuration strengths of SNMPv2* the problem of configuring users and their passwords on a 1,000 node network is reduced from days to mere minutes." notes Steve Waldbusser, principal architect at International Network Services, Mountain View, CA.

SNMP Research's Security Configuration Plus allows semi-automated agent configuration from the management station. Once initial communications are established with the agent, manual visits to the agent device are NOT required. The product's GUI hides the configuration file tables, providing instead configuration options in an easily understood question/answer format.

"True standards-based management security is finally within reach of all customers," noted Case. "We believe that availability of graphical tools such as ours will compliment other efforts such as interoperability demonstrations and renewed standardization efforts to accelerate the arrival of secure SNMP into the market."

SNMP Research International produces a complete family of management products based on SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, SNMPv2*, and other protocols for agents, management stations, and mid-level managers. These products form the basis of many of today's SNMP products offered by leading networking companies. The founder of SNMP Research, Dr. Jeff Case, has long been a contributor in the area of SNMP and has authored or coauthored many standards documents and articles on the topic. As a result of his efforts, SNMP Research is in a leadership position with respect to defining the standards and constructing implementations based on SNMP, the standard protocol for TCP/IP management.
