FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sybase, Inc. Licenses EMANATE®

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, March 28, 1995 - SNMP Research International announces that Sybase, Inc. has licensed EMANATE, the run-time extensible SNMP agent technology which can be used for management of applications programs. In particular, EMANATE will allow managers to use SNMP tools to monitor and troubleshoot geographically dispersed databases. Companies which have invested in SNMP-based managment platforms can extend the use of those platforms to the management of important applications creating a very cost effective use of a proven management framework.

EMANATE provides for management using the SNMPv1, SNMPv2, or both management frameworks simultaneously. The EMANATE family of products is a series of extensible agent products used for expanding SNMP-based management to include management of systems, applications, legacy devices via proxies, and manager-to-manager communications. Previously announced licensees include operating system vendors Hewlett-Packard, Sequent, Data General, and Siemens. Network operating system vendor Banyan has announced use of EMANATE within their management framework. Network device vendors Cisco and Bay networks have also announced licensing of EMANATE technology for use within their products.

Sybase's Peter Duffey says, "We licensed EMANATE because our customers need to configure their remote databases from a single management location, and then they need to monitor the performance of those databases to improve the speed of each transaction. EMANATE allows us to provide that capability to our customers in a standard, open framework with many available tools already at their disposal."

Dr. Jeff Case, SNMP Research, says, "We are pleased that Sybase has chosen EMANATE for management of their remote data bases. Sybase has moved ahead of its competitors by allowing its customers access to management information and control in such an open way."

SNMP Research provides one of the leading vendor-independent reference implementations of the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for agents and manager stations. These products form the basis of many of today's SNMP products. Their work is ported to a multitude of hardware platforms and operating systems.

SNMP Research, Inc. produces a family of management products based on SNMPv1, SNMPv2, and other protocols including agent and management station software for the computer and communications industries. SNMP Research's founder, Dr. Jeff Case, has long been a contributor in the area of SNMP and has written a multitude of articles and papers on the topic. As a result of his efforts, SNMP Research is in a leadership position with respect to defining the standards and constructing implementations based on SNMP, the standard protocol for TCP/IP management. SNMP Research's implementations of SNMP for management stations and agents form the basis for many of today's implementations.
