Secure Management Using Tivoli NetView and SNMPv3

Abstract

Concerns over security are at an all-time high, and many enterprises and government organizations desire to add security to their network management systems. Most network management today is based on SNMP version 1, which has very little security. An enabling technology, SNMP version 3 (SNMPv3), exists to add authentication and privacy to network management. This session describes the deployment of Tivoli NetView and related Tivoli network management products in environments with multiple levels of trust. We will discuss: typical security landscape, a tightly-integrated protocol adapter solution from SNMP Research, and real-world deployment scenarios and issues. The last half of the session will be a demonstration of NetView running with SNMPv3 support, and will also feature use of a security configuration application to help reinforce the concepts explained during this session.
