System Application MIB Announced

Knoxville, TN, October 19, 1998 - SNMP Research International, Inc. announces that low cost management of applications is now within the reach of all organizations through the availability of the Systems Applications MIB Subagent. The Internet-standard Systems Application MIB, RFC 2287, provides a basic set of managed objects for fault, configuration, and performance management of applications without requiring special SNMP instrumentation of specific applications. So now those who are responsible to keep applications running smoothly throughout the corporate network may monitor and control these applications using a basic systems-level view of the applications and the available management stations that they already have installed.

Information which previously required significant customization, long implementation schedules, and proprietary management systems at costs that eliminated all but the largest organizations, are now available in standard form using standard management stations. The Systems Applications MIB has been installed and reporting useful information within ten minutes. Custom applications management packages often require months and sometimes years before useful information is delivered.

The Systems Applications MIB approach yields a great amount of useful information quickly and without custom work. The Systems Applications MIB yields a list of installed applications on each system, the elements that make up each application, and the activity information about each element. When an element ceases to run, the Systems Applications MIB will report which portion is causing the problem, and which application owns that portion.

SNMP Research International will be displaying the Systems Applications MIB Subagent on Solaris 2.6 at its booth at Networld + Interop in Atlanta, booth 7519. Further information about the System Applications MIB will also be available on its Web site (www.snmp.com).

SNMP Research's Systems Applications MIB is a binary EMANATE® Subagent that will find any EMANATE Master Agent running on the same host. The Systems Applications MIB Subagent will automatically link to the Master Agent, which establishes communication between the Subagent and any authorized manager station on the network. If there are other SNMP agents provided natively by the host's operating system or other applications running on the same host, then the EMANATE Master Agent can establish communication for all agents through the Native Agent Adapter option. In this way the EMANATE Master delivers an SNMP multiplexing service.

SNMP Research International produces a complete family of management products based on SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, SNMPv3, and other protocols for agents, management stations, Web-based management, and mid-level managers. These products form the basis of many of today's SNMP products offered by leading networking companies. The founder of SNMP Research, Dr. Jeff Case, has long been a contributor in the area of SNMP and has authored or co-authored many standards documents and articles on the topic. As a result of his efforts, SNMP Research is in a leadership position with respect to defining the standards and constructing implementations based on SNMP, the standard protocol for TCP/IP management.
