SNMP Research at Embedded Systems Conference: Silicon Valley
SNMP Research attended the Embedded Systems Conference: Silicon Valley trade
show from April 3-5, 2007 in San Jose, CA. During the exhibition, we ran an introductory
presentation in the booth, which explains SNMPv3, agents, managers, and IPv6
( available for download (PDF file)).
Featuring EMANATE ONE/Lite
SNMP Research featured
EMANATE®
ONE/Lite, a suite of applications
for developing compile-time extensible SNMP agents which support SNMP,
XML, CLI, and Web-based access of management information. EMANATE ONE/Lite is
very compact and ideal for a single-board computer with a small memory budget.
The agent is compile-time extensible so that all required application-level
information can be built in when the unit is produced.

the official press release.
The EMANATE ONE/Lite software provides the following components:
- SNMP agent: the core SNMP protocol engine installed with each SNMP-managed
device.
- DR-Web Extensible Agent: allows users to retrieve and configure management
information in an agent directly from a Web browser.
- EPIC: the APIs responsible for providing multi-protocol access which
developers can use to integrate other third-party protocols.
- EPIC CLI: a ready-made, extensible command line interface.
- EPIC XML: a TCP-based management interface for Extensible Markup Language
and additional protocols and controls.
The EMANATE ONE/Lite toolkit provides the core SNMP protocol engine that is
installed within each SNMP-managed device. The protocol engine receives and
responds to SNMP actions issued from SNMP management stations. EMANATE/Lite
provides access to management information for each of the managed protocol
layers within the network element. With EMANATE ONE/Lite, a Management
Information Base (MIB) can be written once and used multiple ways.
This approach is MIB-centric and allows access through a common security model.
In addition, individual access modes can be controlled via security policy
administration.
Since its introduction in the early 1990's, EMANTE/Lite has been
deployed over 30 different types of operating systems worldwide.
EMANATE/Lite is an easily implemented, open standards-based SNMP
agent which communicates with any SNMP-compliant manager available today.
EMANATE ONE/Lite is available for licensing. Please view our embedded system
solutions product page for more
information about EMANATE ONE, EMANATE ONE/Lite and their components.
We also have an online demo available for DR-Web, accessable from the DR-Web
product page.
EMANATE ONE/Lite may be licensed on the following operating systems:
Linux®, SolarisTM SunOSTM,
Microsoft® WindowsTM,
VxWorks®, NetBSD®, OSE®, and INTEGRITY®.
Other operating systems are available on request.

Introducing the DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF
SNMP Research is pleased to announce the availability of the DSSP Internet Management
Appliance-RF, a new addition to the Distributed SNMP Security Pack product line.

Available Operating Systems
The DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF is available preinstalled on
an embedded Linux device. The DSSP Remote Forwarder is available separately
for AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows.
DSSP Products
The DSSP product line is made up of three main products: the DSSP Server,
the DSSP Remote Forwarder, and the DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF.
- The DSSP Server Product Line offers a secure solution for network
managers and SNMP protocols in multi-site networks.
- The DSSP Remote Forwarder supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, SNMPv3 protocols;
uses encrypted TCP tunnels through firewalls; and supports AIX, HP-UX,
Linux, Solaris, and Windows operating systems.
- The DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF includes the DSSP Remote
Forwarder pre-installed on embedded Linux platform.
Press Release
SNMP Research Announces DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF
Knoxville, TN, March 7, 2007—SNMP Research is pleased to announce an
important addition to its Distributed SNMP Security Pack (DSSP) product
line: the DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF. The DSSP Remote Forwarder is
now available pre-installed on an embedded Linux appliance. This appliance
can be installed on any TCP/IP network along with the DSSP Server to enable
SNMP traffic and management through firewalls.
Read More or view the official
press release.
By default, many network managers prohibit UDP traffic, including SNMP,
through firewalls. Some reasons include:
- Mistrust of UDP traffic packets since there is no source address verification,
- Disabled ICMP service across firewalls which might be used in a denial
of service attack, and
- Limited security features in SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c protocols.
The blocked UDP traffic can cause problems when trying to manage a multi-site
network or a local network that spans routers.
The DSSP product line provides three products that resolve these security concerns:
- DSSP Server provides non-SNMPv3 network managers access to SNMPv3 protocol for security and administration.
- DSSP Remote Forwarder provides a secure connection with SNMP managers
through a firewall.
- DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF provides the DSSP Remote Forwarder
pre-installed on an embedded Linux appliance.
Like other DSSP products, the DSSP Remote Forwarder uses the SNMPv3 protocol
and encrypted TCP tunnels through firewalls. DSSP Server, with either the
DSSP Remote Forwarder or DSSP Internet Management Appliance-RF at the other
end of the tunnel, provides a secure solution to network administrators who
wish to use the SNMP protocols for monitoring and control throughout their networks.
