Microsoft's recommended interim solution to the February 12, 2002 CERT CA-2002-03 alert is to "temporarily disable the SNMP service" while they develop and distribute a patch (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-006).

For companies that rely on SNMP agents for distributed monitoring and management of mission-critical servers, SNMP Research offers a better solution by recommending products that are not affected by this vulnerability (Release 15.3.1.7 and above).

One low cost option is the EMANATE Master Agent. A second option offering a more complete management package is CIAgent. Both EMANATE and CIAgent work with all of the agent extensions (DLLs) created for Microsoft's standard SNMP agent. A free CIAgent evaluation copy is available for download.
