SNMP Research moves to Release 17.3

Knoxville, TN, February 8, 2013 - SNMP Research began shipping Release 17.3 products to new customers and those with current Software Service Agreements. Release 17.3 continues our commitment to provide you the best products for Internet management, secure transmission of management information, and development tools.

Release 17.3 includes the customary fixes, plus support for new platforms and optional security mechanisms. Here are some of the highlights.

Fixes. Of course, all known major defects and security issues have been addressed in Release 17.3. An extensive list of changes and upgrades can be found in the release notes.

New Platforms. The Release 17.3 upgrade comes on traditionally popular platforms plus newly ported versions of the software and tools. The newly ported platforms include:

Support for new optional security mechanisms. You may want to use additional security mechanisms in addition to the strong security mechanisms of SNMPv3. These may be attractive if the use of X.509 public key encryption is important, if you are responding to a US government bid, or if you have an interest in emerging standards for device configuration.

Behind the scenes. We have modified some of the internal coding that accomplishes the established features of the Internet management protocol, SNMPv3. Some of these were general improvements while others enable new interfaces to support, for example, the new optional security mechanisms listed above.

We have also introduced several new products and enhancements to existing product families.

Recent product introductions:

  1. XML Initiative. For those who use XML applications to manipulate or display management information, the applications no longer need to use an SNMP-based manager as an intermediary.
    1. The EMANATE® ONE agent product allows direct XML communication with an agent.
    2. For a connection-oriented link to an SNMP agent, the BRASS™ server XML component adds to management stations and applications the ability to communicate with one or many agents via XML in addition to all of the dialects of SNMP.
  2. EMANATE ONE. When the delivery of structured management information over non-SNMP transport mechanisms is required, developers can use EMANATE ONE because it delivers management information over a variety of non-SNMP transports, including the Web, CLI, TLS, or XML transports. Our software source license also allows you to use our APIs to utilize other transport protocols.
  3. Distributed Management through Firewalls. For several release cycles, the BRASS and Security Pack™ products have been equipped to enable management through firewalls. This feature will simply work when you license our Remote Forwarder product for the other side of the last firewall, thus limiting the required number of holes in the firewall for passing management information across the Internet. Please see for a detailed discussion of this exciting technology.
  4. Java® Support. Management agents and managers can be integrated with your Java applications through licensing our Management development tools for Java applications.

Our goal is that Release 17.3 will enhance your successful implementation of Internet management technology and security. Please visit our web site at to learn more.
