SNMP Research Celebrates 15 Years

March 14, 2003 marks SNMP Research's 15th year anniversary.

In 1987, Jeff Case was a network manager and computer science professor for the University of Tennessee, struggling with the challenge of how to remotely manage the growing Internet connecting universities and government installations. Case and Ken Key, a computer-science graduate student who became Case's business partner, were key participants in a team that developed an innovative system for managing networking devices and systems, which became an Internet standard known as the "Simple Network Management Protocol", or SNMP. Case and Key developed a management application and "agents" for their equipment, all based on SNMP. Case obtained intellectual property rights to his creation through the University's technology-transfer program in March 1988, and SNMP Research Inc. was formed. On March 14, 1988, IBM signed a software license agreement to become the company's first customer.

In the fifteen years since, the company has grown from a "post office box, a lawyer and a bedroom" to a leading commercial supplier of Internet standard management products. SNMP has become a pervasive industry standard and is used to monitor and manage a wide range of equipment including personal computers, Unix servers, routers, and switches. The company supplies core software technology to the leaders of the computing industry including Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, Lucent, Nortel, and Siemens. Today Dr. Case is the Chief Technical Officer and Founder of this well-respected software company based in Knoxville, TN.

Thanks for a great fifteen years! We look forward to working with you now and over the next fifteen years.
